Project delays are a symptom of future project failure
7 project management strategies to bring your delayed projects back on track and significantly increase likelihood of project success
A lot of strategic healthcare IT projects fall short of C-suite expectations. The bigger the transformation or change that the project has to implement, the higher chance of project failure.
Frequently, future project failure can mask as a delay or multiple delays.
What can you do as an Executive Leader?
Recognize 3 symptoms of increasing risk of project failure.
If your strategic Healthcare IT project:
- Has missed several major milestones or target go-live dates
- Is riddled with escalations that continuously land in your inbox and take up a lot of time on your calendar
- Makes you dread attending Project Executive Steering Committee Meetings or reporting out on this project to the Board
This project is at high risk of failure and it’s time to act!
But first, let’s establish what success looks like
Desired future state – signs of significantly increased likelihood of project success:
- Project team still faces multiple issues and challenges along the way, but they work together to quickly resolve them
- Project team hits most major milestones as planned, steadily marching toward a newly established target go-live date
- You continuously receive updates from the project team of successful project events and steady progress of critical task completions and you feel that the team significantly picked up speed in tackling project tasks.
- You look forward to attending Project Executive Steering Committee Meetings and reporting out to the Board and you have many examples of project team’s successes to share
How do you achieve this desired future state and significantly increasde likelihood of project success?
7 Strategies to Successful Project Execution
Strategy 1. Ensure your teams get what they need when they need to do their best work – that is the best way to motivate your team (unmotivated and dissatisfied team is a project-killer!)
Strategy 2. Make work visible and work priorities well-known and understood (focusing on the wrong tasks is a frequent cause of project delays)
Strategy 3. Identify areas of scope creep and put in place practical ways to manage it (scope creep is a frequent cause of project delays)
Strategy 4. Clearly identify project dependencies and effectively tackle prerequisites (missed dependencies are a frequent cause of project delays)
Strategy 5. Ensure that multiple workstreams do not “step” on each other; synchronize and communicate cross-workstream changes and impacts (re-work caused by cross-workstream impacts is a frequent cause of project delays)
Strategy 6. Put in place communication mechanisms so it is easy to spot troubled tasks early (in days, not weeks) so that project management team can help with those tasks (issues encountered during work on specific tasks are a frequent cause of project delays)
Strategy 7. Ensure your task estimates are realistic and not padded (usually, and especially on high-visibility projects, estimates are significantly padded by team members who want to avoid being late). Improving estimation method on your project is a single most important way to put the schedule back on track, but it requires trust of your project team which only comes after strategies 1-6 have been successfully implemented
